Pre tačno dva meseca, 24. februara ove godine, ruski predsednik Vladimir Putin objavio je početak vojne akcije protiv Ukrajine, čime je započeo najveći sukob u Evropi posle Drugog svetskog rata.
Veliki broj civila je poginuo, ali i ruskih i ukrajinskih vojnika, a gotovo sve najveće sile zapada uvele su sankcije Rusiji zbog napada na susednu zemlju, drugu po veličini u Evropi.
Agencija UN-a za izbeglice (UNHCR) objavila je da je do 15. aprila gotovo pet miliona Ukrajinaca pobeglo iz svoje zemlje otkako je Rusija pokrenula invaziju. Smatra se da je toliko pomeranje ljudi najveća izbeglička kriza u Evropi od Drugog svetskog rata.
UN navode da su 90 odsto onih koji su pobegli žene i deca, jer vlasti u Kijevu nisu dozvoljavale vojno sposobnim muškarcima da napuste zemlju.
Najveći broj njih otišao je u susedne države Poljsku i Rumuniju. Poljska, koja je primila oko 2,69 miliona izbeglica, bila je glavno odredište za one koji prelaze granicu. Rumunija je sledeća s 716.797 izbeglica koje su ušle na njenu teritoriju.
Rusija je trenutno zemlja sa najviše sankcija u svetu. Nekoliko zemalja koje su se pridružile sankcijama protiv Rusije bile su ili tradicionalno neutralne ili su imale bliske ekonomske odnose sa ruskim oligarsima.
Ubrzo nakon početka rata, Švajcarska se pridružila Evropskoj uniji u uvođenju sankcija Moskvi, iako je važila dugo vremena za neutralnu državu. Monako koji je bio oaza za rusku elitu takođe je zamrzao imovinu ruskih oligarha u skladu sa sankcijama EU. Među takvim zemljama su i Singapur.
Srbija je jedina u Evopi koja nije uvela sankcije Rusiji. Predsednik Srbije Aleksandar Vučić tvrdi da su srpske vlasti zbog toga pod velikim pritiscima, ali da uprkos svemu Srbija neće uvesti sankcije Rusiji.
Mnoge internacionalne kompanije i organizacije povukle su se iz Rusije.
Međunarodni sportski događaji i kulturne institucije suspendovale su učestvovanje i gostovanja Rusa.
Zbog ukrajinske krize mnoge zemlje sveta, pogotovo u Evropi, suočene su sa velikim poskupljenjima gotovo svih namirnica, među kojima je gorivo jedna od sirovina sa najvećim skokom cena.
