- Pitanja reditelja Janka Baljaka
ENGLISH VERSION
I am a bit skeptic that old political elites from both sides, that were active during the 1990s conflict, can in any way normalize relations. However, one should stress that Kosovo Parliament has recently voted to form a negotiating team which will lead further talks, and part of the team is comprised of younger politicians with no burden of the past, so my slight hopes lie with them, Veton Nurkollari, a cultural worker, photographer and the art director of „DokuFest“, International Documentary and Short Film Festival in Prizren says, answering the questions asked by the followers of our portal and his counterparts from Serbia within Danas’ online project „Other Side of Kosovo“.
- Questions posted by the social networks followers:
How do you assess the current state of the documentary film in the Balkans?
– I would say that current state of the documentary film in the Balkans is pretty satisfactory given recent appearances and successes at prestigious film festivals around the world.
Is there any appetite in the region for joint co-productions?
– There is certainly will and appetite for, as you say, co-productions in the region and as a matter of fact, this kind of collaboration has already been happening and we have seen a number of co-productions between countries of the Western Balkans lately. Slovenia and Croatia, Croatia and Serbia, even Croatia and Kosovo have been co-producing documentaries.
Is it true that many young people are leaving Kosovo?
– As in other countries of the Western Balkans, young people are trying to leave the country in search of better life. But these numbers are not higher than in other countries of the Balkans, and I would even argue that they might be actually lower.
- Questions asked by film director Janko Baljak
Is there any Kosovo documentary film director who seriously deals with a research documentary film and takes critical look at the problems in contemporary Kosovo society?
– A big chunk of films being produced in Kosovo falls to fiction films, both shorts and features. Unfortunately, we are yet to see a well-researched documentary film that takes a critical look at some of the issues or problems in today’s Kosovo society. But my hope is that this will change soon.
How do young Kosovo film directors view the expansion of documentary film in Europe and the fact that documentaries have increasingly made cinema halls full?
– Documentary films have become increasingly popular in Kosovo , partly thanks to the established documentary festivals such as DokuFest and to films being screened in cinemas and on television, almost on a regular base. This unfortunately is still not translating into increased interest among filmmakers in making documentary films, as number of documentary directors is still modest. But as I mentioned above, a new and young generation is coming, so my hopes are high.
Did the cult documentary film „See You in the Obituary“ („Vidimo se u čitulji“) come to Kosovo through some channels and what were the reactions to it?
– „Vidimo se u čitulji“ was popular among a small number of people. I know when it appeared on streaming services, but, as far as I know, the film has never been shown in Kosovo, so I cannot really comment on reactions to it.
- Questions asked by Danas journalists
What, in your opinion, should be prioritized first and foremost in order to normalize relations between Serbia and Kosovo?
– The process of normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is both very important and very complex, and its continuation until the final, legally binding agreement is reached, is, in my opinion, the sole priority at this moment.
What do you think about the process of normalization that is currently being led by the authorities in Pristina and Belgrade?
– From the perspective of someone in Kosovo who closely observes the process, I would say there is much more willingness, and I’d even say sincerity on Kosovo side for a successful agreement to be reached, than on Serbian side which often employs the obstructionist tactics, to say the least.
Is it possible that the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia might be achieved by the political elites that were active during the 1990s conflicts?
– I am a bit skeptic that old political elites from both sides, that were active during the 1990s conflict, can in any way normalize relations. However, one should stress that Kosovo Parliament has recently voted to form a negotiating team which will lead further talks, and part of the team is comprised of younger politicians with no burden of the past, so my slight hopes lie with them.
